IPL’s Value Soars in 2024

The Indian Premier League (IPL) saw a significant increase in its value, rising by 6.5% to $16.4 billion (around Rs 134,858 crore) in 2024, as per a report by American investment bank Houlihan Lokey. The brand value of the T20 league also witnessed a 6.3% increase, reaching $3.4 billion (around Rs 28,000 crore) year-on-year.

Boost from Tata Group Sponsorship

The IPL’s value has been bolstered by a new title sponsorship deal with the Tata Group, extending from 2024 to 2028 for approximately $300 million (Rs 2,500 crore). This deal reflects a 50% increase compared to the previous arrangement of Rs 335 crore per season. “This significant investment, coupled with last year’s massive media rights auction, underscores the IPL’s status as a pivotal platform for esteemed brands seeking to enhance their value,” the report stated.

Global Reach and Brand Value

The report highlights the IPL’s global reach, comparable to mega events such as the Olympics, FIFA World Cup, and the Cricket World Cup. The league has the unique ability to reach over a billion people, extending its popularity beyond the Indian subcontinent. “Today, the IPL commands widespread recognition, firmly entrenched as a household name with a robust brand recall among successive generations,” noted Harsh Talikoti, Senior Vice President, Corporate Valuation Advisory Services, Houlihan Lokey.

The report also highlighted a significant sponsorship deal, with Qatar Airways signing a three-year contract worth around $9 million (Rs 75 crore) with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad

Rajasthan Royals, now in fifth position with a brand value of $133 million, saw a majority of their sponsors renewing their contracts. Sunrisers Hyderabad follows closely in sixth place with a brand value of $132 million, boosted by strategic player acquisitions and strong performances under the leadership of Pat Cummins.
